A neat little JRPG where you play as the skeleton of the town's former hero. It's a remake of an older title by the developer which I do not have context for as I haven't played it, but having dug up some footage of the original version the differences seem quite significant and 'worth the money', as it were. I'd say the primary reason to play this game would be the narrative. Most of the game's cutscenes are flashbacks via Hudson's perspective from before his death, and effectively characterize and humanize a flawed, aging hero. The story isn't afraid to handle topics rarely explored in videogame storytelling, such as infidelity, and handles them with relative maturity. The game does not bog you down with soapboxing about the flaws of the protagonist (even if other characters in the game may rightfully judge him), instead leaving you to come to your own conclusion about him, displaying his kindness and generosity just as prominently. The town is small but also worth mentioning as a sort of 'character' of its own. From very early on you're able to explore a vast majority of the place, and though small, it's filled with a varied set of interesting encounters and scenarios, ranging from mimic trickery, to horror tropes like haunted paintings. You will also be challenged to protect the very few remaining residents of the place, if you aren't aiming to murder them all instead. Protecting Elizabeth from wolves, the doppelganger demon shenanigans at Charity's house and the fight against the well-hidden Wizard were all quite memorable. I also like the unabashedly evil antagonist terrorizing the place. It's nice to see a bad guy enjoying themselves once every while. The priest is best boy. I also really liked the maid. I was sad she didn't seem to get much of a resolution though. The game uses an old-school rpgmaker aesthetic, but a good amount of character and life was pumped into them. There's a lot of custom poses and emotes that add a lot to the experience. The art in combat also adds some nice flavor, especially when it's one of the townspeople or a major antagonist such as Cloak. I also really liked the music! It has a good number of effective, emotionally weighty pieces and some pretty catchy combat tunes. I think you could justify selling the soundtrack. I particularly liked the one that played during the combat encounter with Ashton. Speaking of combat, actually... It's serviceable? It's a single character turn-based JRPG, which in spite of conventional wisdom I do believe can, and in fact, have seen done well, but combat here is relatively mundane and mostly comes down to you healing when near lethal. The Pacify command exists for certain encounters and doesn't really come with any strategy to its use and doesn't present you with any interesting options. This is mostly fine in the main part of the game because it's easy to avoid the wandering wolves and skeletons and most everything is still set piece fights, but during the endgame portion it's pretty annoying to have to fight through stuff that appears right next to you as often as it does while gaining nothing for your effort as your level has probably long been maxed out. This annoyance resulted me in running a few times and I believe prevented me from getting the perfect ending achievement - not that I care about achievements, but if that also prevented me from seeing a bonus scene I'd be sad. Either way, don't really come in here expecting compelling combat. This was made maybe a bit more frustrating cause I played through the game twice to see the different endings consecutively. Speaking of the endings, I played through the game twice and saw the good and massacre endings(where you kill everything with and without a pulse). While there is certainly a visceral thrill to dooming the town and slaying all of its inhabitants, I can't really suggest actually doing it. This isn't really an Undertale-like thing where you can warp the whole narrative by acting like…
This is a fantastic hidden gem of a game with a lot of heart, I highly recommend it if you're a fan of RPG Maker/Wolf style games
