Decimate Drive

I really liked this game! Great idea and execution. You can clearly see the effort put into it -for example, the car deformation when hitting walls, music playing from cars radio and etc. The new update is quite challenging I haven’t finished it yet tho

Decimate Drive is an indie horror game/”Maximum Overdrive” simulator developed by “Some Random Designing”, an indie developer living in the Netherlands who's been actively developing games since the beginning of 2022. Before the release of Decimate Drive were two separate games, the first one being called "Disposition", a game where you race away from creatures who are attempting to chase you down while you’re in a car. Soon after that was an “authentic World War II single player game about a unit of German artillery observers” titled “Road to Glory”, though this would later be placed on hold (with the last update coming out in December 2022) for Decimate Drive, which was described as “a game inspired by 70s & 80s car-themed horror” with the expectation that they would eventually return to Road to Glory or another war themed game. This game would be worked on for a year and two months with a general release date of February 26th, 2024. Like many of the smaller indie horror games, I’m not exactly sure how I personally heard about it, as it could’ve been through a horror Youtuber or two or it could’ve been through seeing a friend or two wishlist it or buy it on Steam. Whatever the case, I remained acutely aware of its existence through a friend of mine, Chlobruh, who bought it for me back in August of this year and would encourage me to play it. Later on, the person whom I do my Saturday streams for elected this game to be one of the next ones I played for my “cheap/free Indie Halloweenathon” game sessions I do, and now that it’s done I have some thoughts about it. For thoughts on plot: https://backloggd.com/u/gamemast15r/review/5414979/ The gameplay for Decimate Drive is summed up like this: you’re very much on foot, you have to travel from one end of a smallish environment to another in order to interact with red payphones in order to move onto the next level. Most of the time you’ll have one of them shorten out, so you have to keep moving from payphone to payphone until one stops working. So what’s the conflict? You have killer vehicles who will try their damndest to run into you and make your life hellish. You think that the game would be more of a linear game in this regard but it isn’t, and it’s kind of up to you how you wanna get from one section of the arena into the other end through pure strategy. Sometimes you’ll be blessed to find holes in construction, so you can try to lure a vehicle into one of them to knock them out so you can deal with one less threat. Most of the time though it’s not an option so you very much have to move quickly or kind of lure them in before moving at the last second so that they miss, spin out and potentially hit other vehicles. Sometimes you get even luckier, with some of these vehicles getting caught on various different environmental obstacles or even just not moving anymore in general. I noticed that while I was running through the areas in different ways that sometimes cars won’t even turn on until you get closer to them, so it’s a matter of using EVERY environmental asset like telephone polls or concrete railings to hop on and give yourself a bit of safety while the vehicles attempt to circle around and run into each other, the environment or just kind of stalk you. The funny thing is, the vehicles don’t feel stupid in the sense you would think, as yes they’re like wild animals going on a hunt but at the same time they’re not perfect either and can be thwarted. I don’t know how the developer created the A.I. but it feels like the perfect challenge in that regard to plot your own strategies, dodging at the last second (which apparently wasn’t a thing until an update months later) and figuring out how much distance you need to go before the vehicle circles around obstacles and strategically rams right into you.
