Budgie Genetics Simulator

I really wanted to like Budgie Genetics Simulator. I love budgies. They’re adorable, social little birds with so much personality, and the idea of a relaxing game about breeding wild budgies and discovering different genetic variations sounded genuinely charming. Unfortunately, the game ended up feeling less like a simulator and more like a screensaver I could occasionally click on. There is technically some challenge involved. If you breed carelessly, you can introduce undesirable traits and end up with an unhealthy flock. That part at least gives the genetics system some consequence. Beyond that, though, there just isn’t much to actually *do*. There are no achievements, no particularly satisfying progression system, and very little sense of accomplishment. Most of the experience consists of sitting back and watching the birds exist until it’s time to breed them again. And I understand that this is supposed to be a relaxing game. I wasn’t expecting high-stakes management or constant action. But “relaxing” and “barely interactive” are not the same thing. The biggest disappointment is that I never really felt like I was caring for a flock of wild budgies. I didn’t feel attached to them as animals, and I didn’t feel particularly invested in what happened to the flock beyond occasionally checking their genetics. I was mostly just watching budgies multiply. For someone who already loves these birds, that should have been enough to keep me interested. Somehow, it wasn’t. There’s a cute idea here, and the genetics system has potential, but right now the game feels repetitive, passive, and unfinished as an actual game experience. It’s peaceful, certainly. It’s also boring.

10/10 It's charming and fun, and for the most part the genetics are right on for real budgies. I sincerely wish there were more games that offered a nice compact genetic simulation experience like this. Completely worth the $7! All the fun of producing beautiful birds without the seed mess of real life.

This game was purchased for me as a birthday gift and wow, what a cute little simulator!! The available genetics are robust. It does not have rare captive variants like "hagoromo" or the means to make a "halfsider" chimera like the famous Twinzy, but you can make something as complex as a cinnamon recessive yellowface or even a "creamino", a variant of ino. Some rarer options like "anthracite" are available, as well. As a result, I was able to simulate my very first budgie's unique genetics. It's not exact as there is no randomization in how the budgies show their genetics, but it's wonderful to have a digital facsimile of a cherished animal. It was very fun to discover his unique genetics - i haven't unlocked every genetic option yet, but it appears that he was both dominant and recessive pied!! wow However! The greatest benefit to owning this game, beyond the educational aspect, is the ability to have an actual flock simulator. If you have lonely birds during winter, this is an excellent noise generator. Each bird generates its own vocal stream. The background generates wind noises. The weather does not change, but if the noise generation could be customized, it might be fun to have a rainstorm for rainy days. The birds are well animated. They are *so* cute and move realistically. This is a very good flock sim. -- Some notes on gameplay: I found it a little difficult to get started without a tutorial or welcome guide. The controls are simple and intuitive once you left-click on a bird. Instructions are in the bottom left corner. underneath your bird's data. Birds reproduce with no cooldown, but have limited reproduction rates. It can be difficult to keep track of and make room for a steady rotation of birds, especially if you haven't managed to unlock the extra flock spaces (which is only done through unguided achievements). ** A way to purchase more flock space would solve this problem and allow me to much easily sort my flock genetics into different projects. ** -- In conclusion, this is a really cool simulator. thanks so much for making it, both myself and my pet cockatiels are enjoying it.
