The beginning of my story with the Atelier series Atelier Sophie is a very special game to me. It is where it all started for me and it was very nice to replay it now after more than 10 years here on Steam to revisit some old memories now that the series seem to be going to a different direction. I will not write an actual review of the game, but will write a brief part of the memory of the experience that I had when I played it for the first time on my PS4 more 10 years ago and a reflection of some of my thoughts. I remember I played Atelier Sophie just because it was for free on the Japanese PS Plus. I had a PS4 at the time and was a trophy hunter who would play literally anything just for the platinum trophy and decided to play it just for that purpose and I did not know anything about Atelier, nor did ever hear about it before at that time. And well, I ended up absolutely loving Atelier Sophie and it was where my journey with the Atelier series began and I became a big fan of the series and proceeded to buy and play all older games and the following Atelier games. The game also made me a huge fan of JRPGs and niche games, which are now the genres I play the most. It also made me appreciate videogame soundtracks a lot and now it is my favorite genre of music. This game shaped a lot of my videogame experiences and transformed who I am and the games that I like now. At the time I was mostly like everyone else in the west, just playing the popular AAA games and some of the well known JRPGs like Persona and Final Fantasy, and not putting that much attention to actual niche JRPGs like Atelier and Trails (more than 10yrs ago at least, these days they're way more popular). When I booted up Atelier Sophie on my PS4, I was very amazed by the very beautiful art style of the game, especially the 2D artwork of the menus which are really beautiful and a pleasure to navigate. The combat also was very different than everything I had played at the time. I had never seen a game where you would choose the attacks of your entire party at once before ending your turn, and that was a very unique experience to me because usually in turn based games the character act immediately when you select the action. Music is the aspect I was mostly blown away. When I heard Spring Wind Skylark I was completely amazed. I absolutely loved that music, the instrumentation, the symphony, everything. Of course, all the town music, atelier music and exploration music as well. Everything was so unique, ranging from relaxing town music, to fun and cute crafting music, to symphonic heavy metal in bosses. Atelier music has its own unique signature sound that is easily recognizable and not many games can reproduce. Even trying to search for similar music is hard, because there isn't many basically. Crafting was also incredibly fun with the puzzle grid to build items, transfer traits and optimize the output. It was very satisfying and fun to do. It is a game that required actual thinking, optimizing output, experimenting, min maxing, and seeing the end result of the efforts was an incredibly satisfying experience. The progression was also very unique than the usual JRPG where you get stronger by leveling up. In Atelier Sophie, and the Atelier series in general, levels barely matter. I had to craft better gear, use my alchemy skills, optimize effects and traits to become stronger. I had to craft better items to use in combat. Everything was a result of my creation, and not a passive level up thing or exp or gear drop farming like in basically all RPG games. The storytelling was also very different. It was not a game about defeating evil. There is no evil or villains in Atelier Sophie. The game is all about you becoming a better alchemist. Story progresses as you craft better items, you unlock new recipes by experimenting in alchemy and by exploring new areas, you get tips to unlock new areas by increasing the friendship level with other characters and fulfilling…
