Frustrating as all hell to plough through the difficult bits. Would count as Nintendo Hard if it weren't for the generous ten lives per level. Great for both fans of AVGN and old-school gaming.
Definitely an improvement over the first one, shorter levels allow the player to feel less frustration. The structures of the levels are slightly richer, the soundtrack is very good and fitting, there is even slightly better dialogue compared to the first one. The Nerd is as one dimensional as ever, some references are fine, but when you get over a certain age, your ideal character will never be a guy that spits insults every time he opens his mouth, nor he will be funny to anyone with a brain. X) If your state of mind is going through levels where you will die more than often and you're a big fan of the Nerd, this sequel might be a good choice, definitely go for this over the first one if you feel indecisive.
Angry Video Game Nerd II: ASSimilation is a fast, deliberately unforgiving action platformer that turns the outrageous personality of the Angry Video Game Nerd into a full retro-style adventure. Developed by FreakZone Games and published by Retroware, the game builds its identity around difficult platforming, pixel-art presentation, crude humor, cartoon violence, and constant references to the frustrating design conventions associated with older video games. It is clearly designed for players who enjoy challenges that require patience, memorization, and precise movement rather than an easy journey from one stage to the next. The story embraces absurdity from the beginning. A mysterious beam from space transforms the world into a video game, leaving the Nerd responsible for dealing with the resulting disaster. Instead of simply rescuing a few familiar characters, he now faces the considerably larger task of saving the world. The narrative mainly serves as an excuse to send him through increasingly strange environments packed with enemies, hazards, jokes, and gaming references. It never attempts to become a serious adventure, and that is appropriate for the source material. The exaggerated premise provides exactly the kind of setting needed for the Nerd's angry personality and vulgar commentary. Platforming is the heart of the experience. Stages demand accurate jumps, quick reactions, and careful observation because environmental hazards can eliminate the player with little warning. Progress often involves learning where dangers are positioned and adapting after failure. This produces a rhythm in which dying is not necessarily evidence of poor design but an expected part of understanding each stage. The game intentionally recreates the feeling of extremely difficult retro platformers while presenting that frustration as part of the joke. Successfully clearing a troublesome sequence after several unsuccessful attempts can therefore be genuinely satisfying. ASSimilation expands its gameplay through new abilities, mechanics, power-ups, and collectible armor pieces. These additions give the sequel more variety and make exploration worthwhile beyond simply locating the end of a level. Armor upgrades provide additional motivation to search through dangerous areas, while the broader selection of abilities allows the game to introduce obstacles that require more than basic jumping and shooting. This progression helps prevent the challenge from feeling completely repetitive, since players gradually gain more tools while stages continue introducing new ways to test their understanding of the controls. The difficulty remains one of the game's defining qualities, although it also limits its appeal. Players who enjoy mastering difficult platforming sequences should appreciate the demanding structure, particularly because success depends heavily on learning patterns and improving execution. Those who become frustrated by frequent deaths may have a very different reaction. The game makes little effort to disguise its old-fashioned attitude toward challenge. It wants players to struggle, fail, understand what went wrong, and try again. That philosophy complements the Angry Video Game Nerd theme exceptionally well because the entire character was built around reacting to irritating and unreasonable video game experiences. Visually, the colorful pixel graphics reinforce the connection to classic console games without requiring the presentation to imitate a specific title. Characters, enemies, environments, effects, and exaggerated violence all benefit from the retro aesthetic. The cartoonish nature of the graphics also allows the game to feature gore and ridiculous situations without becoming visually disturbing in a realistic sense. Its energetic soundtrack complements the pace of the action and contributes to the sense that the player is moving through an intentionally exaggerated celebration and parody of old-school gaming. The humor…
