There are games that invite you to explore a world, and there are games that invite you to understand it. Alchemist's Alcove appears to understand that these two things are not necessarily different, and I think this is a very important philosophical position. After all, what is exploration without understanding? And what is understanding without the opportunity to explore? These are questions that humanity has been asking for centuries, and it is encouraging to see the gaming industry continuing to contribute to this discussion. Alchemy, in particular, has always represented something greater than the sum of its individual parts. It is the pursuit of transformation, the search for hidden possibilities, and the belief that something ordinary may become extraordinary when placed in the right circumstances. Alchemist's Alcove captures this spirit beautifully. There is something deeply satisfying about the idea that every experience contributes to a larger understanding of the world. Nothing exists in isolation. Every action has consequences, every discovery opens the door to further discoveries, and every journey provides an opportunity to reconsider what we thought we knew. This is, ultimately, what makes a great adventure. Of course, no adventure would be complete without challenges. Challenges are important because they allow us to appreciate the absence of challenges, just as darkness allows us to appreciate light. Without obstacles, progress would be meaningless. Without uncertainty, knowledge would have little value. And without the possibility of failure, success would be nothing more than an administrative formality. Alchemist's Alcove understands these principles. It also understands the importance of freedom. There is a particular pleasure in being given the opportunity to make decisions without always knowing where those decisions will lead. Sometimes the results are exactly what we expected. Sometimes they are something else entirely. Both outcomes contribute to the experience, and both deserve to be appreciated. I believe this is an important quality in any game that wishes to offer something more than a temporary distraction. A good game gives you things to do. A great game gives you reasons to think about the things you have done. And an exceptional game allows you to spend a considerable amount of time thinking about whether the things you have done were, in fact, the things you should have done. There is a certain wisdom in this approach. The world is full of possibilities, and it would be a mistake to assume that we have already discovered all of them. There is always something new to learn, another perspective to consider, another opportunity to improve upon what came before. Perhaps this is why the alchemist has such a special place in our collective imagination. The alchemist does not simply accept the world as it is. The alchemist asks what the world might become. I find this attitude admirable. Alchemist's Alcove is a reminder that the value of an experience cannot always be measured by its immediate results. Sometimes the most important thing is the process itself: the decisions, the discoveries, the mistakes, and the gradual realization that we have become slightly more knowledgeable than we were before. And if we occasionally become slightly less knowledgeable in the process, that is also part of the journey. After all, wisdom is not the absence of uncertainty. It is the ability to continue moving forward despite it. I would recommend Alchemist's Alcove to anyone who appreciates thoughtful game design, the spirit of experimentation, and the idea that an adventure can be meaningful without necessarily needing to explain exactly what that meaning is. The Philosopher's Stone may represent the ultimate goal, but perhaps the real value lies in the journey toward it. Or perhaps the real value lies somewhere else entirely. I am happy to leave that question open. Recommended.

For me, the game crashed to desktop half a dozen times in my 19 minutes of playtime. Did not seem to matter if I started a new game or loaded an old one.

The absolute golden example of a classic roguelike. The first few runs may be a pain of "wait, how do I survive??", but then the real gameplay strikes and its SO thematic, SO satisfying. If you somewhat liked the visual style of the trailer - I strongly recommend this to you, it delivers! Its quite painful to play this on steamdeck, but even with this - I liked it so much! Upd. --- Well, this was before I died for the first time after a 3h run --- To my sadness, the feeling of discovery vanishes just at a point where I wrote my review for the first time. I still leave it as a positive one, for the hours I really liked, BUT 1. The crafting tree is exciting. The spells it provides are not. They are, essentially, one of three types 1.1. Damaging spells - unlimited usage ones are borderline useless agains mid-tier enemies. Limited usage is better spells, but there are actually only 2-3 useful options to deal with everything that is not a base kobold. It boils down to: farm one easy area -> craft this one spell -> clear next one non-easy area. 1.2. Static summon spells - that just makes enemies attack it instead of you. Essentially it gives you time to cast damaging spells. And it does NO OTHER EFFECT, that is a real crime imo. In the end, this feels ultra useless to just spend your time on crafting those. 1.3. One time buffs - this is nice. I like this. There are not many such... 2. Crafting system is okay-ish. You dont need to travel to each component on the screen in fact (you can alt+click the floor anywhere on the screen, not just next to you), but it is a bit tedious. 3. There is no meta-progression as such. You can keep you recipes, but it wont help you progress the game - you'll need to gather all the resources once again anyway. The game becomes nearly linear once you know the order of spells and components for them. To sum up: I may try to beat this game once again. But it feels simply unfinished. The art and vibes are 10/10, but the gamedesign ideas are... just okay. Upd. Upd. I got it, the replayability is the problem. Started another run - and I had to execute literally the same sequence in the same order, maaan... I just dont see why its a permadeath game if nothing changes between "runs" - then it as well could be a save-load game, with save being some costy spell
