If you're contemplating 2, 3, or 4: 2 has a larger player base and it's more competitive in the mainstream. That said - 4 is the better game for the player. Why? See below... PRO: This game has a single player with a stellar story and documentary style reenactments to set the stage for the battles and historical context. Multiplayer is why this game is leagues better than the previous 2 titles. The reason multiplayer feels so satisfying is because each Civ is unique. Unique from age 1 to age 4. So mastery is a real thing. The game is updated more frequently so reading patch notes for those inclined make for a dynamic Civ mastery where countering and knowing your opponents weaknesses and strengths is mandatory to remain competitive. I mainly play modded multiplayer games and for that, the mod scene makes for truly fun games that never feel boring. Crucible mode is the wildca

AoE4 feels new, but it still feels like home.
